The heat was stifling under the protective tenting, but the Roman history coming to life in layers at the Viminacium archeological dig in Serbia was unique compensation. (For A to Z Challenge: Letter A)
Just inland from the Danube River, near the Serbian town of Kostolac, the important military encampment was discovered in the 1880s but was mostly dormant as a dig until the last decade. The site dates to the 1st century AD, during Hadrian’s rule (117-138).
It’s easy to find videos, trip reports and official information on Viminacium. But nothing compares with walking these ancient grounds, history coming to life around you.
You had me at Roman ruins. Loved the images. I’m going to follow your blog and see where you are going.
Thank you so much Antonia. Glad to have you aboard!
There’s something so special about getting to visit archeological sites like these! Always fascinating. Great post
I agree, especially if it’s the first one. I had never been to a dig. Thank you for stopping by.
