Discover Challenge: Mahjong

100-Word Story

My grandmother’s hand must be guiding me as I move the mahjong tiles.  Winds, dragons, craks slide over a felted tabletop like the one I sat beside in childhood while the good friends played.  Gin and tonics in hand, competitive spirits roused, they laughed so hard and shrieked so much I could not stay away. Curled in a striped silk armchair, I watched for hours.  Now my own friends are teaching me the mahjong moves, and don’t believe I’m new. Pungs, kongs, chows make sense to me, the rules imprinted on my soul.

  1. Lovely take. Some years ago, I enjoyed playing this on my phone. I would like to invite you to my blog party which is going on right now. It’s a lovely way of meeting and making new blogger friends. The party link is titled Summery blog party live link. Hope you do step in for a bit. Regards.

  2. I too just learned to play mahjong. Love the feel of the tiles, the cracks, dragons, dots and bam. The old sets are beautiful. I had wanted to learn for some time but did not know of a group. Thank goodness I found a lovely group of ladies that were willing to teach an old dog a new trick. So addicting. Love your post on it.
